Operation Eternal Gratitude

Operation Eternal Gratitude

Jordanna Keyser

Operation Eternal Gratitude gives students the opportunity to honor veterans for the immense sacrifices they have made and continue to make for our country through multiple events that we do during the school year.

OEG was started at East following the 9/11 attacks. After such an unexpected, terrifying event, citizens nationwide began to realize the importance of veterans who keep America safe and the great sacrifices they make when they serve. Mrs. Kownourko, who had been an East business teacher, originally started the club and was the advisor until her retirement last year, upon which Mrs. Smith picked it up.

Just like many of us who have members of our family that served in war, Mrs. Smith is a military spouse—her husband served in the air force for over 25 years, so she has seen the commitment of military members first-hand.

She believes it is crucial that those who contribute to the safety and prosperity of our country are honored and recognized for their continuous positive impact. She sees how important it is that students understand their great work, get to hear their stories, and have the opportunity to connect and serve them back in any way.

Past members of East’s OEG club have created the Wall of Honor, helped to organize the Veterans Day assembly, and supported the Travis Manion Foundation—currently, we are donating to Operation Homefront baby shower!

If you have a veteran or military member in your family, are planning on serving yourself, or just simply want to give veterans the thanks that they deserve, join OEG and do some great work with us—we would love to see new members!

Join us for our next meeting afterschool on Wednesday, April 6th in room D128 as we discuss plans for the club and some upcoming volunteer activities!
