Last Tuesday, President Donald Trump took the stage to deliver one of the longest State of the Union speeches, highlighting his accomplishments during the first year of his second term. Americans huddled around their TVs to see if he would address their concerns. According to a YouGov poll reported by CBS News, many were anticipating his comments on the cost of living (69%), the economy (62%), and the ICE operations (53%). With so much on the minds of U.S. citizens, many wondered if he could cover it all.
Throughout his speech, Trump spoke on the U.S.’s “new friend and partner Venezuela,” hinting that this relationship may assist in lowering gas prices due to Venezuela’s abundance in oil. He also noted that the U.S. is producing “six hundred thousand barrels of oil a day.” Otherwise, he emphasized the end of “DEI” and congratulated the USA Men’s Hockey Team for winning gold at the 2026 Winter Olympics.
This year is a midterm election year, with many congressional seats up for grabs in November. Trump will attempt to maintain the Republican majority in both the House and Senate. According to Axios, there is much concern among Republicans about losing control of the Senate, which plays a key role in approving judicial appointments. There are also ongoing internal debates among Democrats, with progressives and traditional members vying for leadership influence.
Regarding Iran, the region has seen a significant buildup of aircraft carriers. Trump spent limited time on this issue, stating that Iran must clearly confirm that it will not pursue nuclear weapons. He stated that “we are in negotiations with them; they want to make a deal, but we haven’t heard those secret words: ‘We will never have a nuclear weapon.'” However, Iranian officials have publicly stated that their nuclear program is for peaceful, civilian purposes and that they do not actively seek nuclear weapons. According to a YouGov poll, 72% of Americans felt that Trump had not clearly explained his position on potential military action in Iran. Further negotiations are scheduled for February 26 in Geneva.
Trump also addressed the Supreme Court’s ruling on his tariffs, expressing disagreement, though this was only a minor part of his speech. He briefly mentioned ICE and the deaths of Renee Good on January 7th and Alex Pretti on January 24th, planning to hold a ceremony for “Americans who lost their treasured ones to the scourge of illegal immigration.” Although CBS / YouGov polling shows that 63% of Americans believe that ICE is too harsh, Trump did not fully address these deaths during his speech.
On foreign hostages, Trump stated he wants the twenty remaining hostages held by Hamas returned, commending Hamas for assisting Israel in locating the bodies of hostages in Gaza. He reiterated the need for a deal with Iran and returned to Venezuela, emphasizing collaboration with the new president. He concluded by expressing hope for an even stronger America.
Overall, Trump covered many aspects of the United States, emphasizing the accomplishments of his first year back in office while omitting certain issues of public concern. The speech appeared aimed at maintaining Republican control of both chambers of Congress. While some Americans expected announcements of military action in Iran, the focus remained mainly on diplomatic efforts. Now it is up to voters in the midterms to determine who will hold power in Congress in January 2027.
