
The story of Punch the Monkey has been trending on TikTok, YouTube, and many other social media platforms for the last month. This heart-wrenching story of a small, orphaned monkey left audiences enraptured as updates on his story were quickly made once zookeepers realized how big of a hit he was.
Punch is a 7-month-old Japanese Macaque monkey who is currently residing at the Ichikawa City Zoo. A video posted of him carrying around his comfort toy, a stuffed orange orangutang, soon went viral. The zoo explained that Punch had been rejected by his mother at a young age, and outcasted from the monkey groups. This was a rare occurrence among Macaques, making Punch an anomaly to his kind. Punch was soon left without friends, forcing zookeepers to think of creative solutions to give him a buddy. The solution? A stuffed animal. Specifically, an orange orangutang who Punch immediately took in, and began carrying around with him everywhere.
People were hooked to this little monkey’s story, making him the center of attention. Therefore, the zoo was quick to release a positive update on Punch: he was starting to integrate with the other monkeys! Punch had started grooming, eating, and forming bonds with the other monkeys in his pen. People flocked to this story, viewing Punch a symbol of hope and resilience, throwing him into internet fame.

The most recent updates have shown Punch sitting with the adult monkeys in his enclosure. The zoo is also happy to report that Punch is no longer being pushed around by the other monkeys as much and is starting to limb the rigid social hierarchy that is often present among his species.
